They say the first step is admitting you have a problem. My name is Michael and I have too much.
For most of my life, I have been what others might call a minimalist. As time has passed though, I kept more and more things, most of which didn’t really serve me well. Faced with the need to do some spring cleaning, I happened upon this blog post showing several somewhat embarrassing facts about how much stuff we have. That’s when I decided it was time for a big spring clean.
My partner and I have a great home, with more than enough room for us and our beloved pets. What we don’t have room for is all of the stuff I have accumulated, so I have decided to carefully go through everything that belongs to me and make the sometimes tough choices about what stays and what goes.
For the first day of this journey, I went for the biggest collection of “too much”, my clothes. There is no denying that I own too many clothes, so I decided if it hasn’t been worn in the last year, someone else needs it more than I do. With that standard in mind, here is my Day 1 list of items that will be tossed, donated, or sold:
- 25 long-sleeve dress shirts
- 7 short-sleeve shirts
- 1 sport coat
- misc. underwear and socks
- 4 sweatshirts
- 1 hoodie
- 10 t-shirts
- 1 suit
- 4 jeans
- 3 pants
Later this week I will tackle the office and the attic.
Do you have plans to do a spring cleaning and purge? Any advice on how I should tackle the rest of my tasks?
