The October Food Stamp Challenge is considered in full effect immediately.cardAs of 12:01am on October 1, 2011, we are officially on a food stamp budget in the total amount of $279.18.

As mentioned previously, this amount is equal to one month’s average SNAP benefits for two Alabama residents, plus 10% added to make up for the sales tax that would not be charged on an actual EBT card.

The image to the left is a scan of the actual card and the receipt verifying the amount of the purchase.

This video is a short introduction to the challenge as well as what we hope to accomplish by taking it.

Photo: Konrado FedorczykoBy now most of you know that in addition to being a garden author I am a diehard advocate and speaker on food ethics and what is happening with our food system.  In the interest of helping you to learn as much as possible about what is going into your body, I have put together this list of 5 food documentaries that I strongly recommend you see.

Each of these films contain information that will likely shock you, but shock isn’t the end result I hope for.  It is my hope that you will use these resources to educate yourself about the many problems that face our food system from our produce to our water supplies, even the earth in which our food is grown.

You are invited to share your thoughts about any (or all) of these films in the comments below.  Let’s start a dialogue about what is wrong and what we can do to turn the tide.

earthdayI can still remember my first Earth Day in 1989. I was a senior in high school, full of ideas and hope for what the future would hold. It was the year I first embraced vegetarianism, something that would be a part of my life for many years.  Truth is that when left entirely to my own devices I am naturally a vegetarian and rarely think of eating meat on my own.  But I digress…

Earth Day is one day out of every year.  It represents not what huge things we can accomplish in a 24 hour period, but what we could do if we each adopted small changes that we embraced year round.  If we all carpooled for took public transportation regularly, imagine the amount of fossil fuels we would avoid consuming.

If we gave up paper towels, paper plates and other pointless disposable items that we take for granted, how many trees would we save?  How many tons of trash would be saved from the landfill?  Changing those things for just one day would make a small impact, but what if we changed something – even something that seemed minor and insignificant – for good?

That is my wish for you on this Earth Day 2011.  That you will find some small thing that you and your family can do for good and commit to turning that commitment into a lifestyle change.
