Take the 2012 Victory Garden Pledge

While watching this public domain film from the 1940s on victory gardens, I happened to see a sign that one of the actors was nailing to a board outside of her garden area and it gave me an idea.

I asked myself why we shouldn’t take a similar pledge in 2012 and when I could think of no logical argument against the idea, I set out to replicate the very pledge sign I saw in the video. Rather than risk the use of the 4H logo that appears in the original, I replaced it with a stylized American flag.

My Earth Garden: The 2012 Victory Garden Pledge

In 2008 I wrote a piece called “Bring Back Victory Gardens” that remains a popular post to this day. In it I urge people to return to the way of thinking that pushed us to grow our own food as a way to ensure food security in uncertain economic times. Those uncertain times aren’t the 1940s, they are here today and we need to pledge to do something about it while we are able.

Take the 2012 Victory Garden Pledge by downloading a printable copy of the image you see above. Print and sign the pledge, taking the opportunity to talk with your family and friends about the importance of growing your own food.  To download this image as a full size 8 1/2 x 11 PDF file, click here.

Let’s bring back the victory garden in 2012!

Loved the film. My lettuce is coming up, Snow Peas planted, Carrots, Broccoli, Beets, Chard, and spinach also planted. Kale and radish will be planted this week. Still have alot more veggies to plant, tomatoes, pole beans, wax beans, cucumbers, squash, and some potatoes when it warms up a bit more. Some I have in cold frames in my raised bed. So yes I have taken the pledge and will continue to do so with my children and grandchildren as helpers. All organic in my small raised veggie garden and in containers as well. It gets better and easier every year. I think I will be watching this film over and over. I will share it on My Garden page for others to enjoy and take the challenge too.
