This is Day 27 of a month long food stamp challenge. If this is your first visit, please check out this link to see all of the posts and get a better understanding of what is going on.
I’m not asking a question of the day today, instead I’m asking you to respond to this post with the name, address and phone number of a local food bank or soup kitchen in your area. One of the things this challenge has inspired us to do is to compile a working database of food assistance programs across the country and to get started we will need your help. Don’t expect much to happen with the info right away – John’s having surgery tomorrow and we have a lot of irons in the fire. Eventually though, there will be progress.

Just four days to go! Maybe since you have $50 left and just four days, you can celebrate on the last day with steak and a bottle of wine!:-) Even though we are poor, i try to buy one bottle of wine a month. I just started that a couple years ago, and it’s not always possible, but it’s a goal.
I have greatly enjoyed your blog and the comments–hope you haven’t minded my incessant commenting myself too much!!! One thing i have been stunned about is the difference in prices between there and here. On most meals, just one of the items would be more than your whole meal.
St. Vincent de Paul food pantry here is located @ 5227 North Bowdoin Street Portland, OR 97203-4397. They don’t have a direct number, as you have to first be approved by the over-arching St. Vincent’s in Portland, but like i said before, even if you haven’t, they still always gave you food in the days i volunteered there, but that may have changed with the great increase in people needing food assistance these days.
Gentlemen – I am the Volunteer Coordinator for The Upper Room, in Placerville, CA. We are a free dining hall, open every day of the year. Our address is 1868 Broadway, Placerville, CA, 95667. We serve dinner from 4-5:30, and every diner has the option of taking 2 “to-go” meals (basically brown bag lunches) when they leave. (these 2 extra meals ensure that our clients have 3 meals over the course of a day). If any of your readership is ever in need of a meal they are welcome. If they would like to volunteer (we always need food prep folks, and servers) I can be reached via email at [email protected]. Please indicate ‘Upper Room’ in the subject line. Thanks to both of you!
Sorry, I think the suggestion to splurge on wine if there is any money left over is silly. That is why so many people do not have a stockpile in their pantry.
Use the money to buy more supplies.
What i suspect will happen, you will feel guilty and donate it to a foodbank.
Personally I would rather give the proceeds to an individual/family that needs it, than to a food bank. I see the lack of discipline at food banks, so i won’t do that.
I don’t know any individuals/families that deserve it either. They all have money for cigs/beer.
