Seed Starting Tally
A supermarket visit yesterday reminded me just how important it is that we are growing our own produce and fresh herbs. This market is charging $.99 for a quarter of an ounce of herbs. That’s roughly 3 3 1/2” sprigs of rosemary to give you a frame of reference and using that as a mean value I can safely say that I have grown tens of thousands of dollars worth of herbs over the years! For that matter, a single healthy rosemary plant could be worth hundreds of dollars. Seeing the value in growing for yourself yet?
Here is the current tally for our seed starting efforts so far this season, counting only those seeds that have germinated as of today.
- Started 1/26/11
3 Aunt Ruby’s German Green Tomato
2 Mortgage Lifter Tomato
5 Large Red Cherry Tomato
12 Sweet Basil
2 Mammoth Dill - Started 2/1/11
4 Red Hmong Cucumber
5 Common Sage
0 Moss Curled Parsley
There will be lots more in the coming weeks, though with several inches of snow on the ground at the moment it seems as though spring is never going to get here.
