Food Camp Kitchen Survival Skills Level 1 is the first in my new series of cookbooks available now on Amazon.com.
Food Camp is survival training for the kitchen impaired; a how-to guide that will teach you to prepare the basic dishes we all love and to do them well. Start your training with basic breakfast foods like eggs and smoothies, then move on to your choice of several soups and salads for lunch. The dinner menu has plenty to choose from for even the most picky eaters, like burgers, fries, macaroni & cheese and even chicken nuggets. Did we mention dessert? Let’s just say your sweet tooth with not be disappointed.

I’ve seen this mentioned a few times but I could never track down the original source. There were images all over social media explaining how to make a homemade ice pack but I wanted to give this homemade gel ice pack thing a try, especially since I am training to run a 10K in a few weeks. Turns out, it works perfectly!
EDIT: A word of caution about the alcohol. Don’t use scented alcohol because the odor will seep into the freezer (and refrigerator), even if you double bag it! Learn from my mistakes, people. You don’t want wintergreen scented soy milk. It just isn’t right.

My homemade granola recipe contains only natural ingredients and is sweetened only with honey, so you can rest easy knowing exactly what goes into what you eat.

This weekend I set up my indoor seed starting area.
There are many ways to create an area to start seeds indoors (and I have tried most of them), but this system has been the easiest and most cost-effective method I’ve found, which is why my setup is making a return appearance exactly as I used it last year. As the old adage goes, if it ain’t broke…

I started writing about frugal living when people thought the term frugal lifestyle meant that I was a hoarder who kept the same pair of worn out tennis shoes for 20 years, reused tissues and wrestled homeless people for a penny I saw on the sidewalk. Then our generation’s Great Recession began and people began to look on this frugal thing a bit more favorably.

Smoothies are huge these days, and with good reason. They make a perfect healthy meal replacement and they taste like dessert.

Nothing compares to the satisfaction of growing a garden. Whether your garden is made up of containers on a city fire escape, a few square feet in a suburban raised bed, or a quarter-acre of freshly tilled earth on a rural homestead, there is something undeniably fulfilling about growing your own food.
If you are a first time gardener, I have a few suggestions to get you started on the right foot. While each situation is unique, these tips will serve as a good starting point from which you can make adjustments based on your needs.
