Steve Bender

Steve Bender is intimidating, overbearing, and I’m pretty sure he pinches babies to make them cry.

Okay, so none of that was true. He is, however, grumpy as hell. In fact, he has built an entire career on it. As Southern Living’s Grumpy Gardener, Steve doles out surly advice and sometimes even talks about gardening.

He’s a natural born smartass, which is probably one of the reasons that we have been friends for so long. My only regret is that we waited until after I left Birmingham before we spent any time together. He’s the kind of guy who drinks beer and falls asleep under trees without getting arrested for it, and that’s a skill I have yet to master.

At P. Allen Smith’s annual Garden2Blog event in 2012, Bender brought down the house at the final dinner of the event with his live band rendition of the classic “Ring of Fire”:

Steve’s birthday was yesterday and I wanted to say a public “Happy Birthday”, mainly because the restraining order says that I can’t contact him directly anymore.

I admire Steve. Not only is he a talented singer but the things he can do with a tuba is nothing short of amazing.

And though he forgot my birthday, which was a day before his…I’ll still wait by my mailbox in case he does send a card.

Happy Birthday, Steve!
(no, really…it was my birthday on the 14th.)

I bet his social secretary neglected to put the card in the mail, Nick. Don’t feel slighted.
