I have successfully completed my relocation from Birmingham to Atlanta just in time for unseasonably cold temperatures for April. Actually, today’s pollen counts were off the proverbial chart and now tonight and tomorrow night the temps are expected to dip down to the freezing mark or below. What does it all mean and why should I care?
For starters it means that I was accidentally intelligent by not putting this year’s tomato plants in the ground when Barry and I bought them last month. The weather was perfect for it but our ground preparations took much longer than expected so I opted to put the new tomato seedlings into containers for holding until I could complete my move and then get them into the ground.
As luck would have it, it was a good move; I have been moving the tomato plants into the garage two to three times a week for the past couple of weeks and now the temps are dipping dangerously low so the new Japanese Maple we just planted in the front yard is the target of my concern.
By Thursday the overnight temperatures will be back up to a workable range so this is probably the last cold weather setback of the season. That means that by this time next week my tomato babies will be in the ground and ready for some serious growing!
